It wasn’t long after the whipping winds and torrential rains of Hurricane Helene had subsided from Asheville, NC and surrounding towns before the community began to pull together resources and labor to try and meet people's basic needs. A restaurant prepared free meals for those with no electricity or way of cooking, donkeys were utilized to deliver supplies to those in more remote areas whose roads had become inaccessible, and a brewery became a donation center for clothing, essentials, and canned goods which came pouring in from around the country.
Outside organizations were impressed with the communities' rapid grassroots efforts, but the people of Western North Carolina weren’t surprised at all: This is what happens when you live and work together in a community every day, and not just during a disaster.
